What is the Life of an SEO Influencer Like, Really?
Over the past few interviews, we’ve had a variety of freelancers and SEO agency folks talk about different aspects of the SEO industry.
Today, we are going to host someone who has built a personal brand and an SEO agency at the same time.
Our guest today is Matthew Woodward.
Now, lots of you probably know all about Matthew and his award-winning blog. Today’s interview is about taking a closer look at the man himself.
Enough rambling. Let’s just dive right into it – Matthew Woodward, everyone!
Search Traffic Generation Expert,
CEO, SEO Elixir
Date: 16 Novembber 2019
Nirvana: Hey Matthew! First of all, thanks a lot for accepting my interview invitation. Would you mind giving our readers a brief intro about yourself?
Hey, thanks for having me. I am Matthew Woodward and I have an internet marketing and SEO blog. I focus primarily on helping people with an online business, to find solutions to their problems, by publishing detailed case studies, reviews, and tutorials.
I also run an SEO agency which is called Search Logistics. You can work with my team of top SEOs to achieve your business goals.
Nirvana: Now, I know that you started your blogging career writing game reviews way back. Tell us a bit about that. How different is blogging now vs then?
The blogging world is so different now and has evolved so much! In my gaming review days, things like affiliate marketing didn’t even exist. Nor did platforms like WordPress.
Blogging is way more accessible now. You can set a blog up in no time at all and with the click of a few buttons have an article published – a different world entirely from when I first began my career.

Nirvana: I’ve always noticed that you maintain a balance between quantity and quality in all your blogs. For all the agency folks reading this – how do you manage to do something like that on a deadline?
It is really about the process. Having a solid content production process from idea to publication is the key.
I have full processes written and assigned to the correct person for every stage of content production. This includes my writers, my graphics team, my video guy… they all know exactly what I need from them and when.
It’s important to update these process documents regularly too because if for any reason I lose one of the team – I can recruit and handover the process documents to someone else within a few days. This really limits any disruption.
Nirvana: You’ve won several awards to date for your blog. Tell us about your first one ever and how you got nominated for it.
Yes, I have won 8 awards to date:
- HubSpot Top 5 Internet Marketing Blog
- Affiliate Summit Best Affiliate Blog
- Technorati Top 100 Business Blog
- The Best Of Search Engine Journal
- ProBlogger One To Watch
- Unbounce Top 75 Internet Marketing Blogs
- UK Blog Awards PR & Marketing Highly Commended
- UK Blog Awards Digital & Technology Highly Commended
I’m usually nominated by my readers and have been a number of times for the UK Blog Awards which puts on a great event in London.
Nirvana: There are a lot of scammers in the marketing industry. Have you ever been scammed? How does one deal with something like that?
As a general rule of thumb, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If it’s a “quick fix” it’s probably a scam. Whether that’s internet marketing or finally getting that six-pack.
You just need to be aware that there are people out there who will happily promise you the earth, take your money and disappear.
You need to have realistic expectations and if you are going to invest your money in a product or service, then make sure you do your research and read real-life reviews.
Nirvana: Is there such a thing as too much marketing? Is there a point that you reach when your readers see you popping up everywhere and they don’t really like that?
Obviously you need to be sensible with how many emails you are sending and social media posts etc… but really, as long as you’re always adding value, people don’t mind being interrupted.
Nirvana: This is another SEO agency question: How do you handle brand attrition?
We don’t worry about that as an SEO agency.
We focus on relevant keywords that bring customers, which in turn helps to build the brand (assuming they provide a good customer experience which is out of our control).
Nirvana: How do you go about increasing the number of revenue channels for the same business?
Affiliate marketing is a great way to diversify with zero risks or investment – just send traffic and bank.
There are so many easy to find, high-quality products/services in your vertical that your customer base will be interested in.
You can even make relationships with those that you’re recommending and do some cross-promoting.

Nirvana: What do you enjoy more – B2C marketing or B2B marketing?
Honestly… Whichever one presents the most profitable opportunity at that current moment.
Nirvana: What is Matthew Woodward’s list of X things to do before you die?
Matthew: I have worked hard and actually achieved a lot of my dreams already. I live in paradise, own a business which I enjoy, I have travelled the world, learnt another language and had my first child a year ago… life is pretty great.
I guess my list would revolve around having great adventures and spending time with my family and close friends. Easily done here in Costa Rica 🙂
Nirvana: Thanks for taking the time to get real with me, Matthew. I appreciate this a lot. A special thanks to Gemma Swanson for making this possible.
