How do we keep growing as an SEO?

This question has bugged me often and bugged me a LOT. Getting into the marketing world is a crime of passion. But once you are in, how do you keep growing? How do you stop yourself from stagnating?

The SEO scene in India is so stale that people who have been in the industry for ages now are still doing the exact same thing. Because most of the agencies are assholes, SEOs never really get to read or pursue different things that they are into.

So, this week, I’m having a little heart-to-heart with Marko Velickovic from Serpline. Marko seems to have a great mind for business and SEO (which is rare, trust me) and at the same time, he seems to keep on growing.

What is Marko’s secret? Time to dive in.

Marko Velickovic, everyone!

Never Stop Learning - A Short Interview With SEO Specialist Marko Velickovic 1

Interview With:

Marko Velickovic,
CEO,
Serpline

Interviewed By:

Nirvana Guha,
CEO, SEO Elixir

Date: 09 June 2019

Nirvana: Hello, Marko! Can you please give our readers a small intro about yourself?

Marko:

– My name is Marko
– I’ve been a full-time internet marketer since 2009
– SEO consultant
– Dog lover
– Currently a student of applied arts

Nirvana: I know that you graduated from economics. Tell me a little more about why you decided to enter the world of SEO? Did the knowledge that you gained on the Faculty of Economics actually help your make that transition?

Marko:

I randomly found out about internet marketing – via a friend who was studying computer sciences at the time.
At that time, while I was studying I was also a manager of one cell phone chain store. Although the salary was good, I didn’t like the conditions, so I decided to look for something that would potentially be mine.

I always wanted to build something that I would own.

I asked my friend: “What exactly are you doing online?”. When he explained I simply knew that was I wanted to do!

I knew I found my dream job.

During my studies, I learned how to be organized, how to organize my business and that’s exactly what I applied on internet marketing.
Also, I learned a lot about money flow and how to manage it.

I applied it all and now I can say I have financial freedom. I don’t have a boss and I feel great about that.

Sometimes things can get pretty tough, but it’s my job and I’m endlessly motivated.

Nirvana: You are also a Fine Arts student. Tell us a bit more about what it’s like and what made you study Fine Arts at first place.

Marko:

I always wanted to study some arts. Actually, I wanted to study photography. However, my parents were against that, so I had to study something specific, like economy or law.

I enjoy painting so much, and next year I will graduate.

By studying arts you learn how to recognize beauty in general.

Besides giving me pleasure I found out that studying arts is also very useful for life and business.

Nirvana:

You seem to be doing a LOT of things at the same time. Tell us what your day usually looks like and how you prioritize different tasks?

Marko:

I do all the things I like, which is why nothing can be overwhelming for me.

My day:

1. I wake up – kiss my girlfriend
2. Check my emails
3. I take my dog for a walk (Jack Russell Terrier)
4. I go to college
5. I have lunch
6. I take my dog for a walk again
7. I work (I write new ideas, talk with partners, with employees, build my business every single day)
8. I going out for a drink (not always)
9. I get back home and check things again (I sometimes prepare all the things for the next day or the next week)
10. I go to bed, read a book or watch something interesting or simply do nothing

Also, from time to time I get tired of doing one thing only, like my job for example. In such cases, I spend more time at the college. Likewise, when I get tired of the college I work more.

In fact, these are all the activities that somehow complement my life.
The only important thing is that you succeed in balancing your life activities and creating harmony in your life.

Everything else comes spontaneously and can’t be difficult.

Nirvana: The SEOProLab venture brought you a LOT of recognition. How did it all start?

Marko:

Everything started with small SEO services and the idea of providing services to people with a tiny budget.

We started very quickly to be recognized as a brand because we did our job very responsibly. We always gave more – more backlinks, more articles, more advice. All in all, we always gave better support which is a big part of any business.

Very quickly, clients with larger budgets started to appear.

We never stop learning. We invest a lot in knowledge, in real SEO courses, etc.

Just do your job like you would do it for your own website and you will have lifetime clients – guaranteed.

People feel when something is wrong or when someone tries to charge them a lot more for no reason.

Don’t try to fool your clients.

Nirvana: How do you choose your clients?

Marko:

We don’t have some kind of special selection process. If a client has a decent budget (this gives us a lot more options for better rankings), and if they do not have some crazy and unreal requests, we start the collaboration.

Nirvana: What is the #1 thing about any employee that instantly irritates you?

Marko:

Irresponsibility and laziness.

Nirvana: Wow. There’s no way anyone could have said it better.

When was the last time you took an entire day off from work and just relaxed? Also, what do you do to relax?

Marko:

I mostly relax at weekends.

I hang out with my girlfriend or with my with friends, play tennis, do outdoor activities like hiking or climbing. I’m also into martial arts (Kung fu), and sometimes during weekends, I organize training session with my friends from the martial arts club I’m a member of.

All of these activities are a must because they are very good for relaxation and concentration. This particularly refers to people like me, internet marketers, who do not have specific working hours and amount of work.

Nirvana: What’s more difficult to deal with – an annoying employee or an annoying client?

Marko:

No difference, believe me 🙂

A difficult person is a difficult person everywhere and always.

The only difference is, we don’t have those kinds of employees nor those kinds of clients. All our clients are very reasonable and very pleasant to work with.

A difficult person is a difficult person everywhere and always.

Nirvana: What is the number one tip you have for SEOs who are just starting out?

Marko:

Never stop learning, because both the world and our business are changing very fast.

If you stop learning you will fail. Be honest and always do more.

Nirvana: I can definitely get behind the idea that more SEOs should always keep learning.

I appreciate you taking the time out for this, Marko. Thanks a lot. I really enjoyed this. Hopefully, you had a great time too.
